"As we continue to grow as a profession, we research administrators need to become more proactive in establishing what it means to be a research administrator, what kinds of skills and experiences are needed and will be required in the future, how entry level research administrators should be trained, how continuing education should be offered to mid and senior level professionals, and-the key to formalizing any profession-how we should evaluate and validate our professional competency."

Pam will serve as president-elect for one year and then move up to the position of president for another two years.

New Certificate Programs to Launch at the 2007 Annual Meeting

Walk out of the SRA 2007 Annual Meeting with more than just a great educational experience behind you. Use this opportunity to complete one of several new programs being launched in Nashville. Below we profile four new programs.

Human Research Protections Certificate Program

The Human Research Protections Certificate Program is ideal for someone new to human research protections or for research administrators expanding their professional knowledge. The comprehensive curriculum provides an overview to the ethical principles and regulatory requirements critical to conducting and monitoring research with human subjects. View the program curriculum

Research Law Certificate Program

The "theory of everything" (TOE) is a hypothetical theory studied in theoretical physics whose intent is to fully explain and link together all known physical phenomena. The Research Law Certificate program is similar to TOE in that it attempts to explain and link together all known issues of research administration. Legal issues arise throughout research, starting with intellectual property issues, continuing through contract and grant matters, and living on in post research licensing, "derivative works disputes," and post-clinical trial liability questions.  The Research Law Certification program is for both new research administrators who need a "boot camp" approach to recognizing the legal issues that they will face daily, and the more experienced administrator who works with general counsel and outside attorneys on a daily basis.  Because there are so many legal issues in research, the curriculum is very broad and constantly changing to address new issues confronting scientists, research administrators and their attorneys.  View the program curriculum.

Grantsmanship

The Grantsmanship Certificate Program provides instruction in developing the project plan for the grant application, using the review criteria to structure the application, and minimizing the potential post award compliance issues.  The curriculum integrates the art and science of grantsmanship with numerous examples and scenarios designed to provide a meaningful "hands-on" learning experience, such as participating in a Mock Panel Review for an agency, evaluating goals hypotheses, and developing specific aims for accuracy and measurability, and budget design.  The program is designed for the research administrator who wishes to assist faculty or investigators in pursuing external funding sources.  Research administrators will also learn from proven examples designed to help them create a more supportive environment to assist faculty in writing more and/or better proposals, locating appropriate funding sources, writing short proposals for private or internal funding support. View the program curriculum.

The Practice of Research Administration and Management

The Practice of Research Administration and Management provides intermediate level exploration of many of the key areas of research administration, including leadership development, research integrity, financial management, faculty development, regulatory compliance and the role of the research administrator. Its curriculum includes one workshop, five required sessions and two elective sessions. View the program curriculum.

Tentative Meeting date for the Rocky Mountain Chapter is March 20-21, 2008.

SAI: Ten Years of Commitment

SAI (Sociedad de Administradores en Investigación), the Southern Section's local Chapter of in Puerto Rico, celebrated its Tenth Annual Conference.

SAI celebrated its Tenth Annual Conference on August 29-31 at the San Juan Mariott Hotel. Over ninety research administrators, Deans and even Presidents from higher education institutions attended this conference. Official representatives for the Department of Homeland Security and the National Science Foundation were invited.  Following a presentation of Dr. Norman Maldonado, former President of the University of Puerto Rico, who in 1997 provided support to initiate this chapter, a special luncheon ceremony was offered to pay recognition to all past SAI Presidents.

Resident Commissioner Honorable Luis Fortuño, one of the guest speakers, presented various funding opportunities for our Hispanic higher education institutions and also made reference to matters that are vital to Puerto Rico. Various issues that concern the resident commissioner in relation to congressional legislation and Puerto Rico include status, appropriations, farm bill, health care, military spending, a water bill and the "No Child Left Behind" reauthorization.

As an outstanding event of this conference, SAI granted a $3,000 scholarship to one of its active members to attend the SRA Annual Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee.
