As one of the honored recipients of the 2018 Speaker Travel Scholarship, I recently attended the International Network of Research Management Societies (INORMS) conference in Edinburgh, Scotland to present a Pechu Kucha entitled “Breaking the Bubble: Developing Productive Relationships in Research Administration.”
The content of the presentation consisted of critical analysis performed on scholarly reviewed journals and independent data collected through surveys from colleagues across various research institutions. The findings were emphatic: Networking with intention is the key to breaking the proverbial bubble.
This concept was particularly relevant for the INORMS conference, which welcomes research administration delegates from all across the globe. I was able to share information and ideas with other research professionals from diverse backgrounds and create lasting connections for future networking and collaboration.
In addition to presenting, I attended sessions by some of the UK’s most prestigious administrators, and learned a lot about innovation, development and technology transfer in the evolving research admin paradigm. I was also able to see a presentation by the UK’s first proclaimed ‘Doctor of Happiness,’ Dr. Andy Cope. His presentation on manifesting daily brilliance and happiness in the workplace was both refreshing and enlightening.
Dinner groups and scheduled tours in the evenings allowed me to take in some of Scotland’s beautiful landscape and learn more about its interesting history and unique culture. One highlight was the historical walking tour which included the Scott Monument, The Princes Street Gardens, the Scottish Enlightenment and a visit to the Stone of Destiny at Edinburgh’s castle.
Overall, attending the conference was an amazing experience! I am very thankful to SRAI for awarding me the travel scholarship. It is an honor to be a part of an organization that encourages and supports the growth and development of its members. I look forward to many years as a member of the organization.
