VICRA Experience 2024

Attending the Virtual International Convention for Research Administrators (VICRA) conference organized by the Society for Research Administrators International (SRAI) was an enriching experience that provided a deep dive into the evolving landscape of research management and administration. The conference equipped me with fresh perspectives especially in the areas of research, team management (in both research and project management), as well as general career development. As a fervent seeker of insight into the intricate world of research management, I embarked on this journey with anticipation and curiosity. Little did I know that the experience would not only expand my understanding of the field but also foster profound connections and ignite innovative ideas. I had the opportunity to engage with fellow professionals, learn from experts in the field, and gain valuable insights that will undoubtedly shape my future research administration approach.

The sessions were engaging and offered a wide range of knowledge. Topics covered included the importance of the socioeconomic and environmental impact of research beyond publication, research ethics, leadership development, approaches to building an effective and efficient team in research and writing comprehensive research grants. One particularly insightful session was led by Floris van der Leest on the reference model for research management titled Data, Outputs and Impact. The session was an eye-opener; I especially appreciated the detailed explanation and how the process was broken down at the various stages in the grant cycle. In addition, the session on critical thinking, titled Thinking Outside the Box, equipped me with the rationale of ‘thinking beyond the box’ and enhanced my abilities to initiate solution-based thoughts in my workplace and my normal daily routines.

Overall, attending this conference was a transformative experience. The well-organized format, the engaging delivery of the speakers, and the insightful questions and answers from my co-participants all contributed to the conference’s general impact on my career development. As I reflect on my time at the conference, I am grateful for the insights gained and the connections made, and I look forward to applying these to my work as a research and grants manager.
