Investing in the professional development and career progression of research administrators is crucial for advancing the field of research administration. These professionals are the backbone of our organizations, playing a pivotal role in our collective success in research. This commitment to invest in research administrators begins internally within our institutions and extends outward through our active engagement with the Society of Research Administrators International (SRAI).

As research administrators, our roles continuously evolve alongside the complexities of research. To navigate these challenges effectively, SRAI must continue to innovate and expand its offerings. This entails providing inclusive opportunities for training and professional development that are accessible across diverse career stages, expertise levels, organizational types, and global locations. By doing so, SRAI will continue to be the premier authority in research administration.

In my nine-year journey as an SRAI member, I have supported and educated research administrators through various platforms, including workshops and sessions on negotiation, networking, strategic planning, academic politics, team leadership, multigenerational workforce dynamics, and remote work. These experiences have reinforced my belief in the importance of continuous learning and professional development in our field, highlighting the significant benefits that SRAI brings to the research administrator community.

With over 25 years of progressive leadership experience in research administration, I currently serve as the Vice Chancellor for Sponsored Programs and Research Operations at the University of Pittsburgh where I provide leadership and strategic direction for the University’s research operations and the Office of Sponsored Programs. I am the institutional signing authority for a research portfolio of more than $1.25B in research expenditures. My academic background as a Ph.D. and current role as a Professor of Surgery and Immunology have deepened my understanding of the research landscape and the critical role of effective research administration. Teaching and mentoring have further enriched my perspectives on the needs and aspirations of research administrators. All these experiences have prepared me for my role on the SRAI Board of Directors.

During my three-year tenure as an At-Large Member, I have made strategic contributions and provided practical guidance to enhance the governance of the society and actively participated in key initiatives including the Strategic Plan, the PI Intensive, and the Career Framework Task Force. As Co-Chair of the Education and Professional Development Committee, I have championed efforts to deliver high-quality training programs tailored to the diverse needs of research administrators.

Furthermore, I am the Principal Investigator of a National Science Foundation GRANTED Conference Award aimed at establishing a national job classification system for research administrators which reflects my commitment to addressing the needs and challenges of research administrators and to improving their recognition and career journey. SRAI plays a crucial role as a collaborating partner in this initiative, and through collaborative efforts like this, we can drive impactful change that benefits the research administrator community and ensures that SRAI remains at the forefront of research administration practices worldwide.

Looking ahead, if re-elected as an SRAI At-Large Board Member, my steadfast goals include expanding educational offerings, advocating for the professional development of research administrators globally, and responding to the evolving needs of SRAI members. The future of SRAI hinges on our collective ability to innovate and adapt, ensuring sustained vibrancy and relevance in our field. I am committed to shaping the future of research administration and investing in our community by continuing to serve on the SRAI Board of Directors for a second term. Together, we can forge a dynamic global community that propels research administration forward.
