Empowering Diversity Part III | The Future of AI in Research Administration and Its Role in Enhancing DEI
Artificial intelligence (AI) can impact the multigenerational workforce in significant and dynamic ways by influencing workplace roles and other aspects. It provides opportunities to improve workforce performance, team building, and interactions among co-workers. Here are some key aspects to consider:
Adaptability
- Younger generations, like Gen X and Gen Z, are often tech-savvy and adaptable. This gives them an advantage in roles that require AI proficiency.
- Baby Boomers may need a little more time to adapt to AI; however, knowing the historical aspects of a role adds dimensions to the capabilities. There may be a need for significant reskilling to keep up with technological advancements for all employees. Universities are increasingly investing in training and software programs to help research administrators adapt and improve efficiencies.
Changes in Duties
- Many manual and repetitive tasks have long left research administration. Over 20 years ago electronic research administration (ERA) was born, allowing employees to focus on higher-value tasks that require critical thinking and creativity.
- While some jobs may disappear, AI is also creating new roles that didn’t exist before, such as AI ethics compliance, data analysis, and AI maintenance. Training in these roles is important to all generations in research administration as the rules by which universities operate undergo changes.
Working as a Team Member
- AI-driven tools facilitate remote collaboration, which appeals to both older and younger workers seeking flexibility. Remote work environments provide opportunities for greater concentration on tasks at hand. Providing weekly team meetings via zoom and teams provides interactions and opportunities for team building.
- As different generations work together, the blend of traditional methods and modern technology can foster innovation. It is important to provide an atmosphere of mutual respect and embrace the diversity of all team members.
Supervisors and Managers
- Data gleamed from AI can provide insights that inform decision-making, changing the dynamics of leadership. All leaders can embrace AI tools; however experience and intuition of seasoned members can add valuable historical insights.
Acknowledge and Embrace Diversity
- AI can tailor work experiences to individual preferences, potentially increasing job satisfaction across all generations.
- AI tools can streamline workloads, allowing for better work-life balance, which is particularly valued by all research administrators.
AI is reshaping research administration in significant ways, driving both challenges and opportunities. Embracing these changes through continuous learning and adaptation can lead to a more innovative, collaborative, and efficient workplace. Universities that understand and leverage the strengths of a multigenerational workforce will likely thrive in this changing environment.
