NIH Comprehensive Overview Mini Intensive 

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the world's largest public funder of biomedical research. This six-hour intensive will touch on nearly every critical aspect of the NIH…from agency organization and finding the right NOFO to application and budget preparation to required prior approvals and final grant closeout. Hands-on exercises and interactive discussion will be a part of each session, and participants will learn how to find answers to questions as they arise.

Learning Objectives


At the end of the intensive, participants will be able to:

    • Describe the general organization of the agency
    • Navigate the online resources for funding opportunities, application preparation and grants management
    • Uncover NIH funding opportunities and decipher a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO)
    • Locate resources for application preparation
    • Explain key elements in preparing an NIH budget
    • Describe the key elements of application review and decisions to fund
    • Uncover the essential elements of a Notice of Award
    • Detail various reporting requirements, including the Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR)
    • Describe required prior approvals and the process for submission
    • Explain how to maximize use of four critical NIH sources

Intended Audience


This intensive is intended for both newcomers to research administration and more experienced administrators who need to broaden their understanding of this agency.

CEU Credits:

  • This course is eligible for 6 Continuing Education Units (CEU) credits.
