Happy Research Administrators’ Day: Let’s Make a Difference!
Happy Research Administrator Day! Research administrators are a special kind of professional, and you deserve to be recognized, never more so than in 2020, a year of epic challenges. You are resourceful, curious, and tireless in your pursuit of excellence. Your diligence and hard work are a big part of the research engine propelling the advancement of our Society. I, and the SRAI Board, applaud you and have full confidence that your future is brighter than ever before.
There are many aspects of research administration that make us, and our profession, amazing. If you know me well, you know that I love mysteries. I read them whenever I can. I particularly love mysteries with plots that don’t go in a straight line but keep you guessing on who did it and what twist or turn is coming next and that truly is the essence of research administration; it is solving puzzles, anticipating the unexpected, and dealing with the curves and surprises as they come along. It takes a special kind of person to thrive in the “mystery” environment, and you are the personification of special.
I hope you can take a few moments to really recognize the contributions that you make. And your impact goes beyond the technical aspects of the profession. Over the years, many of you have helped me and supported me. In particular, two very special people in my background stand out as making a lasting impact on my professional and personal development. One recognized the potential in me and invested the time and effort to be sure I would realize my potential. She stuck with me through many of life’s difficulties while I established myself in the profession. The second person helped me overcome my natural proclivity to be an introvert and helped me dig deeper and access skills and capabilities I wasn’t even fully aware I had. Both mentors have a stake in my career success and reinforced the culture of paying it forward.
You, just like my mentors, impact so many people in small and large ways and are an instrumental part of the development of your colleagues and peers. I don’t know of a more selfless professional class than research administrators, with the exception of research administrators that are also SRA International members and volunteers! You go above and beyond the norm investing in yourself and others. So, on this special occasion, please take a moment to bask in your accomplishments, express your appreciation to those who have been instrumental in your success, and dedicate yourself to making a difference in the lives of those around you. Together, we have the potential to make a big difference.
