Welcome to the January issue of the Catalyst. We are happy to serve you for another year, to bring you the newest trends in the profession, and to keep you abreast of what is happening with your Society. We hope that our newest columns on professional development will help further your knowledge of programs, processes and best practices to make your day-to-day life easier. Our Literature Review column presents you with works that intersect with our professional interests in research, research administration, and university life, and just maybe, will help you find a book for a cozy Sunday afternoon on the couch. We are fortunate to have a great committee of volunteers who have prepared a whole slate of surprises for the upcoming year. This issue starts with our “View from the Top” column which features Rene Hearns. If you’ve ever wondered how to write for the Catalyst but didn’t know how to start or what to write about, then don’t miss the second article in the Professional Development column. Are you interested in weighing internal promotion vs. recruitment of outside talent? If so, check out this month’s Background Noise column and explore the increasingly competitive landscape we face when searching for talented research administrators.

We are happy to introduce a brand-new column on SRAI Leadership, featuring stories about leaders from the Board, Committees, Sections, Chapters, and others within the Society. This month and next we start with us, the Catalyst editors. We at the Catalyst want to know about you, and in turn, want you to know about us. Share your story! Contact us if you’d like to be featured in a future column, or nominate a co-worker or colleague to share their story.

Don’t miss the latest news from your Section and Chapter leadership. Are you prepared for the upcoming meetings? Programs are out for the 2018 Northeast/Western Section meeting in Boston and the 2018 North Carolina Chapter meeting. Links to registration for those meetings are imbedded in the articles. The program for the 2018 Midwest/Southern Section meeting in St. Louis will be available by the end of the month. Additionally, we are excited about the 2018 INORMS conference in Edinburgh that attracts research administrators and managers from around the world. As you can see, the January issue of the Catalyst is jam packed! Enjoy and we’ll see you in February.

We want to hear from you! Become a Catalyst contributor. Contact Dilyana Williams to share your ideas.
