Alabama-Mississippi Chapter

The Alabama-Mississippi Chapter is thriving and moving forward despite the disappointment of having to first postpone, then ultimately cancel our Annual Chapter Meeting. Nevertheless, plans are underway for new and exciting initiatives to continue to grow the Chapter’s membership and expand professional development offerings in the upcoming year as we will meet virtually and work toward convening in person in Tuscaloosa, AL, 2021. We completed transition of the chapter leadership at our recent virtual business meeting and wish to thank our outgoing officers for their dedicated service, and welcome our new leaders. Below is a brief introduction to our new officers. Special thanks to Ward Duke of The University of South Alabama, our outgoing Treasurer, and Ginger Phillabaum, our outgoing Immediate Past President, for their years of service and friendship.

I am proud to be your new President for the Alabama-Mississippi Chapter. I have worked in Research Administration for 14 years in a few different roles all at Mississippi State University. My current position is the Executive Director of Research Fiscal Affairs for the Vice President for Research. I am really looking forward to working with the Chapter this year. Our Chapter is so fortunate to have such great leadership, past and present, that is committed to the growth and mission of SRAI. I have some big shoes to fill, but I am ready for the challenge! On a personal note, I am happily married to my husband Ryan and we have two beautiful children, Will (11) and Alyssa (8). My family loves Mississippi State athletics and Disney World, two things we miss dearly right now.

Anthony J. Edmondson, MBA, is the Research Administrator for The University of Alabama in Huntsville's Propulsion Research Center where he has been since 2008. Anthony has worked in Research Administration and Financial Administration at institutions of higher learning for 20 years, including The University of Texas at Austin and DePaul University. He also has civil service and private sector experience with the United States Air Force and Motorola. When he's not engulfed in Research Administration, Anthony enjoys spending time with his wife, family and friends; traveling; and attending several genres of live music venues.

John Hedberg is a 2012 graduate of Auburn University, where he currently works as a Contract and Grant Specialist in the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering. In his spare time, he enjoys swimming, tennis, and traveling.

My name is Amanda Seymour and I am the Director for the School of Ocean Science and Engineering Finance Administration. I have been working in Higher Ed for over 12 years now with my most recent 5 years being at The University of Southern Mississippi. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my husband and two kids and exercising along the MS Gulf Coast. I am excited for the opportunity to serve as an officer for the AL-MS Chapter of SRAI and look forward to providing professional development opportunities within Research Administration for our current and future members.

I have thoroughly enjoyed serving as the AL/MS Chapter President for 2019-20 and could not be more excited about the team elected to carry this chapter forward. After many years and different roles in research administration, I’ve recently been named Director of the new Office of Research Development at Mississippi State University, a support unit dedicated solely to building institutional and individual faculty members’ capacity to produce competitive proposals, identifying targets of opportunity for synergistic and collaborative projects for the MSU research enterprise, and supporting the education of faculty and staff in developing quality proposals. My husband Kirk and I are proud parents of two awesome, busy teenage boys, Max, 18, and Otto, 14.
