New International Privacy Regulations and Their Impact on Research

Understanding international privacy regulations is a critical component for institutions participating in international research and it will help your organization and researchers avoid research delays and potential fines. James Riddle, Vice President of Research Services and Strategic Consulting at Advarra, will be sharing his 20+ years of experience working in the field, and helping you understand the changing global privacy regulatory framework and how it may apply to research during an SRAI Webinar on March 17 titled New International Privacy Regulations and Their Impact on Research. From Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, James and his team at Advarra provide support to institutions to help them understand and evaluate the various national privacy regulatory frameworks, and then develop strategies to implement compliance mechanisms to minimize roadblocks. Unknowingly noncompliant is not an excuse that governments and auditors are going to accept.

While the United States, according to James, is unlikely to adopt a similar regulatory framework to the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) within the near future, individual states are starting to drive the conversation, such as California with their recent passage of the California Consumer Privacy Act. Additionally, other countries are moving to protect their populations’ personal data, and some countries have had strict protections in place prior to GDPR.  James will be sharing practical examples based on his prior experiences during the webinar.

James got his start in research operations and compliance at a large independent institutional review board where he found his work making research happen, both meaningful and rewarding. When he’s not busy helping research organizations navigate global privacy regulations or tracking regulatory changes for their research impacts, James enjoys reading, swimming, and walking his dogs in the Phoenix area. Be sure to join the March 17 webinar to learn more about James and the changing regulations surrounding data privacy.
