Monthly Poll | Preferred Work Arrangements

When the stay-at-home orders started rolling out last year, we made some big adjustments to the way we work.  Many of us thought we were going to be home for two weeks and, for some of us, it’s been well over 12 months. We adapted and excelled. We found new ways to complete our necessary job functions but some of us missed the human connection aspect of our work.  As we start to transition into new work situations once again, we asked you to tell us about what you’re looking forward to about returning to the office and what you’ll miss about working from home.

I think it says a lot about how well we adapted that not one respondent said that returning to the office meant that they could do their job better. You were all focused on seeing colleagues again or meeting them face to face for the first time.  You were looking forward to having the physically distinct spaces of the office and home to help with work-life balance.

When asked what you would miss about returning to the office, so many of your answers focused on time. The extra time you have by not commuting two to three hours per day. The extra time with loved ones who work different hours. The extra time to sneak in precious moments of laundry and lunch with spouses over the mid-day work break. There were also a few lamentations about leaving the comfy clothes at home and returning to the forward-facing business casual of the office.

This month we have a few more questions for your reflection on these irrevocable changes to our workspaces. Would you rather work from home permanently or some hybrid of time in the office and working remotely?  What are your institutions discussing with you about your work arrangement?  We know that many of our institutions have yet to make any definitive decisions. But we on the Catalyst Committee found that the conversations on each of our campuses were quite different and we wonder what’s happening on yours.

Let us know what your preferred work arrangements will look like!
