Your Questions Answered | Advancing Your Career

Throughout this year, the Catalyst will feature a question posed to our panel of SRAI Distinguished Faculty members to get their take on all sorts of topics encompassing research administration. Do you have a research administration question for our experts? Send your questions to catalyst@srainternational.org!

This month, we asked our experts: What are some of your favorite or most used research administration acronyms?

Dara C. Little, Associate VP for Research/Executive Director Sponsored Programs, Northern Illinois University, SRAI Distinguished Faculty

  • My favorite is probably FFATA (Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act) – it’s just fun to say!

Domenica Pappas, Associate Vice Provost of Research, Illinois Institute of Technology, SRAI Distinguished Faculty

  • FGTRP (or FOGTRAP) – Foreign Government Talent Recruitment Program.

Jose Alcaine, PhD, Director of Research Services, Affiliate Faculty, Virginia Commonwealth University, SRAI Distinguished Faculty

  • Here are a few acronyms that are commonly used (in pre-award) that are nuanced, but people use them as generic, “what I mean is – application instructions.” RFA (request for application); RFP (request for proposal); FOA (funding opportunity announcement); PA (program announcement); Opp (opportunity).
  • And the best acronym: RAs – Research Administrators!
