During this webinar, the presenter will describe common operational challenges in clinical trials administration that influence participant enrollment, administrative efficiency, and participant experience. Mr. Gough will provide insights from his 27 years of academic research experience and highlights from recently published research in this area. 

Mr. Gough will share clinical trial “process improvement successes” from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), Department of Medicine (DOM) where the he created and managed the DOM Clinical Research Operations Group. The group, comprised of administrators, study coordinators, and key faculty was an “action-based forum” created to identify and eliminate bottlenecks and inefficiencies in managing clinical trials within the DOM and MUSC. Mr. Gough will also describe institutional improvement initiatives undertaken in collaboration with the MUSC Clinical and Translation Science Award (CTSA ) Program.

  • Understand common clinical research challenges and process improvement opportunities in three areas: participant enrollment, administration, and participant experience.
  • Provide a benchmark comparison using interactive polling to identify challenges faced in these areas.
  • Identify opportunity areas attendees could potentially manage their trials differently and more efficiently.

Mr. Gough was Program Manager for Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA) Cooperative Studies Program (multi-site, Phase III clinical trials program) in Washington, DC from 1991-2004.  Mr. Gough transitioned to Director of Research Operations, Department of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, SC from 2004-2019.   Mr. Gough joined Greenphire in 2019 as Solutions Specialist for Academic Medical Centers and University Accounts.

Mr. Gough enjoys supporting his research colleagues across the country with:  innovation and best practices; process reengineering/improvement; and goal attainment through communication and teamwork.

Mr. Gough received a Meritorious Service Award in 2004 from VA, Office of Research and Development and in 2014, Administrators of Internal Medicine Distinguished Service Award from the Alliance of Academic Internal Medicine.

Mr. Gough received a BS degree from Penn State University in Health Care Administration and a MA degree from the University of Alabama in Clinical Research and Epidemiology.
