Angela Sherman
Manager of Sponsored Projects Administration, School of Medicine
University of Virginia

Angela Sherman is a Certified Research Administrator with 20 years of experience at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Her current position is as Manager of Sponsored Projects Administration in the School of Medicine. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA. Her first position at UVA was as an Administrative Assistant to a world-renowned Investigator, who took a chance on a former music teacher and introduced her to scientific research. In his large lab she was exposed to an incredible variety of research activities and learned to manage them from the ground up. She has leveraged those skills into increasingly responsible positions at the Departmental, School, and Central level. Over her career she has partnered with faculty, management and staff to educate, develop and protect the research enterprise at the University. Her current position is focused primarily on post-award activities, including financial monitoring of grant awards and compliance.

Angela is active with the Society of Research Administrators International since 2003, where she has served as President of the Virginia Chapter, on many committees including the Catalyst, as a speaker at local and international meetings and as an ad hoc member of the Board of Directors as Chapter Representative. In that capacity she has worked to advocate strongly for the importance of the Chapters to the strength of the Society. She believes that the Board of Directors should be comprised of research administrators from a variety of backgrounds that will keep the Society true to its grassroots constituency. She is not a Director or a Dean, but rather a Research Administrator who still prepares proposals, monitors grant expenditures, educates others and stays in touch with the needs of the community. It is from this perspective that she would like to continue her work to help the Society carry out the strategic plan and continue to be a growing and relevant professional society.
