What I Wish I Knew When I Started in Research Administration | Simon P. Philbin

Members of SRAI’s Distinguished Faculty were recently asked, “What do you wish you knew when you started in Research Administration?” Over the next few months, we will share their insights and observations.

I can think of two things I wish I had known when I started in research administration (RA). First, the more time you can spend planning for a new project or research initiative, the more it will help later on, particularly when trying to respond to risks and other issues encountered during the project delivery. Second, while it is of course important to follow organizational processes, specifically those related to research administration, it is also important to follow your instincts and gut feelings when confronted with a new situation. This is especially the case when faced with a new opportunity where there is uncertainty over which course of action to follow.
