Jumpstart Your Research Administration Literacy with LevelUP

The research enterprise is growing more complex and will require agile employees who can meet the challenges of tomorrow. Given the volume of changes expected over the next ten years, how can you stand out to strategically move your career forward?

If you are not sure where you want to start with developing your expertise, SRAI offers the LevelUP Micro-credential Program in an accessible format to support career development goals. LevelUP courses are virtual modules covering various research administration disciplines. It is a cost-effective way to increase your skillset while finding out where your passion is within the industry.

Personally, I have found these training modules to be incredibly useful to augment my career development. Several years ago, when I was new to National Institutes of Health (NIH) post-award management, I took the NIH Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR) mGuide to help jumpstart my literacy in this type of award reporting. The guide was incredibly useful and provided a practical approach to become a go-to person for principal investigators to manage their reporting. I loved being able to go through the programming on my schedule, so I could fit it in between my day-to-day work and pick up where I left off if an administrative emergency came out of nowhere.

The future of research administration will see an increase of specialized research focus at institutions, an increase in interdisciplinary research, and greater complexity and need for compliance among sponsored projects. If you attended the annual meeting this fall, you probably sat in on an artificial intelligence (AI) or future-focused session that emphasized how specialization will be critical for institutions and individuals to navigate compliance, law, and complex funding mechanisms intended to create rapid response research to address emergent health and environmental threats.

SRAI offers multiple pathways at the moment for what the future holds for research administration. I took the NIH path based on my award portfolio, but you may consider further development in the growing field of clinical trials or research development.

Be sure to check out the LevelUP courses on SRAI’s website for the many opportunities and titles that are offered.
