This session will cover issues of Human Resources Management for the Department Administrator. This will be an interactive session using various “what is wrong with this?” case study scenarios to facilitate discussions HR management practices at various Universities/Institutes. This session will also cover hot topics such as grievance/conflict resolutions, on-boarding and supervision styles/issues.

S2: Crafting an Elevator Speech

Picture this; you step onto an elevator and, to your surprise, immediately following you is the hiring manager of your dream job, which you recently applied for. What is your elevator speech going to be? 

An elevator speech is a concise description of an idea, ability, or content that a listener can receive during a single elevator ride. In a world where 20-30 seconds can make a difference, you must develop the perfect elevator speech to sell your skills and abilities to potential employers. Taught by Dr. Gregory A. Brightbill, this session teaches you how to craft your perfect pitch to deliver it on the fly and in those briefest moments .

 

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Participants will be able to identify and explain the three components of an elevator speech.
  2. Participants will have experienced how to deliver an effective, concise, and persuasive personal speech, which could be used during the time span of a single elevator ride.

S3: Investing in Personal/Professional Development = Opportunity

Individuals will be asked to reflect on their goals and to begin developing a personal/professional development action plan.

S4: The Research Administration Training Program at Johns Hopkins University

The Research Administration Training Program at Johns Hopkins University (JHU) was established to build a new pipeline for research administration staff for our robust research portfolio at the university. Over the years, the program has been modified based on the participants’ input but at the core, the program moves a cohort of trainees in pre-award, post-award, departmental, business office, and internal audits rotations. They also attend specialized classes and conferences and come out at the end of the 18-month program highly sought-after by hiring officials at JHU. We’ll talk about how the program started, how it has changed over the years, and how the program has adapted in the hybrid/remote modality.

  1. Attendees will learn how JHU established a full-time training program then expanded to start a program for existing employees.
  2. Attendees will learn what benefits the university, departments, and trainees receive from the programs.

S5: Stress and Workplace Performance

Workers around the world are reporting feelings of workplace stress and disengagement. Unwinding from our daily job tasks is essential for sustaining health and well-being. Yet, people struggle to disconnect from the stressors that run them ragged. Recovery is the process of repairing symptoms of stress. This session will discuss workplace stress and provide tips on moving to a place of recovery.

  1. Define workplace stress, psychological effects of workplace stress, physical effects of workplace stress, and relationship affected by stress.

In the session we will look at different scenarios that research administrators often face and discuss the mechanisms that could be implemented to streamline the process for both the research administrator and the PI.

It’s no secret that we are all burned out from the pandemic. Thankfully, there has been a ton of information and statistics shared in the last couple of years about how important personal wellness is. But information alone doesn’t help someone start to feel better. We want to share how to transform this valuable information into usable tools and encourage you to take their next step in reclaiming their wellness.

S10: Implementing New Policies and Procedures Using the New NIH Data Management

What do you need to think about and prepare for when a new policy is on the horizon, whether a new federal policy or regulation, or a new university policy? Using the recently implemented NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy as an example, we will consider best practices for developing the internal awareness, training or instructions, and procedures to comply with a new policy. Points of discussion will include who is affected by a new policy, changes to pre-existing operations, and monitoring compliance.

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Participants will learn strategies for review of policy/regulation and development of related education and processes.

  2. Participants will acquire an understanding of how to use existing policies and procedures to establish guidelines within their office or department.

In this session, we will confront imposter syndrome head-on by exploring ideas of reflection, self-care, personal stories, and humor to reduce imposter behaviors and empower you.
