2019 Western/Southern Section Meeting

March 10 - March 13, 2019
Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego
San Diego, CA

The 2019 Western / Southern Section Meeting will take place in sunny San Diego, March 10-13, 2019 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt on the spectacular waterfront of San Diego Bay. The eighth-largest city in the United States, San Diego is home to cultural sites and exhibits, several major sports teams, eclectic food and drink locations and 70 miles of celebrated coastline. This dynamic city will provide a stimulating venue for SRAI members to network, learn and share.

Our host hotel is the Manchester Grand Hyatt, conveniently located in downtown San Diego. The tallest waterfront hotel on the West Coast, the Hyatt is just a few minutes from the San Diego International Airport. Also located near many of San Diego’s top attractions, the hotel features premium amenities, restaurants offering a range of gourmet and causal fare and the Top of the Hyatt, located on the 40th floor of the Harbor Tower with panoramic sights of Coronado Island and the San Diego skyline. The SRAI Room block is open for reservations.

Select one of three certificates to work on: Financial Management (FM), Introduction to Research Administration & Management (IRAM) or Research Development (RD). Follow tracks in Professional Development; Financial & Post Award, Management & Operations; Sponsored Programs Planning, Development & Delivery; Ethics & Compliance; or Sponsors & Agencies. Or mix it up and do a little bit of everything! We have great keynotes lined up, so you won’t want to miss breakfast on Monday morning: Ellen Ochoa, recently retired as the Director of Johnson Space Center in Houston and served on 4 missions to the International Space Station and Robert Harman, founder and CEO of VetStem Biopharma, the first US-based commercial veterinary stem cell company.

This meeting will be the perfect opportunity to network with your fellow Research Administrators! We hope to provide ample opportunities to mingle with your colleagues; at the business luncheons, breakfast, during breaks, at receptions and dinner groups. As we know, making friends in the research administration community is essential. We can’t do this complicated work alone.

San Diego is so much more than their world-famous zoo. There are so many other things to do that you will want to bring your family and come early and stay late. Theodor Geisel (Dr. Suess) is a favorite author of many, lived in nearby La Jolla where you can find the Lorax Tree. Spend some of your down time at the San Diego Zoo, Sea World, Balboa Park or Old Town. Seaport Village and the USS Midway Museum are within a couple of blocks and Coronado Island is just a short ferry ride across the bay.

What can we say about the food options in San Diego? Known for everything from craft beers to fine dining, San Diego has just about everything for foodies and non-foodies alike. Eater lists the 38 Essential San Diego Restaurants, Thrillist notes their Best Restaurants and the San Diego Restaurants web site has multiple search options.

All hands on deck will be needed to make the 2019 Western / Southern Section Meeting another SRAI success. A variety of volunteers will be needed during the planning stage and more will be needed on site. It is fun, rewarding and great to meet new colleagues. If you would like to help, please let us know. We love our volunteers and can’t do this without you. Help us make your meeting informative and fun!

We look forward to seeing you in sunny San Diego in 2019!
