View from the Top | Summer is Here, Take Time for YOU!

Summer is officially here. Kids are out of school. Many of our students and faculty are gone. So, what are your plans? You say you don’t have any? Shame on you. A work-life balance is essential today more than ever due to several recent factors that have emerged and evolved.

We are experiencing an increased workload and less staffing to support our organizations. We have witnessed our profession characterized by long working hours, tight deadlines, and high expectations. In such environments, individuals may experience burnout, stress, and decreased well-being without a proper work-life balance. How many people on their deathbed do you know that said, “I wish I had worked more hours?” I don’t know any.

When we lose sight of the importance of work-life balance, as leaders, we tend to overburden our top performers, which can be dangerous. To foster a healthy and productive work environment, it is essential to distribute workloads equitably, provide adequate resources and support, and promote a healthy work-life balance for all employees, including top performers. This is why training is essential to our profession.

We should all know now that Millennials and Generation Z often prioritize work-life balance as a critical factor when making career choices. They value flexibility, personal fulfillment, and the ability to pursue interests outside of work. As this group becomes a significant part of the workforce, their influence is reshaping workplace dynamics and emphasizing achieving a healthy work-life balance.

A work-life balance is more critical today than in the past due to technological advancements, increased work pressures, changing societal expectations, health concerns, and evolving attitudes toward work. Ensure you and your staff balance work and personal life for overall well-being, job satisfaction, and maintaining a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle.

Take some time off, enjoy family and friends, and most importantly – enjoy some “ME” time. You deserve it!
