Your Questions Answered | Onboarding New Faculty Members

Each month, the Catalyst will feature a question posted to our panel of SRAI Distinguished Faculty members to get their take on all sorts of topics encompassing research administration. Do you have a research administration question for our experts?  Send your question to catalyst@srainternational.org!

Do you have any tips for onboarding new faculty members?

Sandra M. Nordahl, CRA, Director, SR Contracting and Compliance and Facility Security Officer, San Diego State University Research Foundation, SRAI Distinguished Faculty

  • Meet with the faculty, whether in person, on the phone, or virtually. Invite all the potential players to this meeting, including compliance, export controls, human resources, IT, purchasing, and other departments that will be involved with their sponsored programs activities, not just pre- and post-award teams. Provide information about other individuals that will be helping with the processes and items to assist the new faculty member.

Jason Guilbeault, MBA, CRA, Associate Vice President for Sponsored Programs Administration, Executive Director,  Augusta University Research Institute, SRAI Distinguished Faculty

  • We do a large group meeting with new faculty and include members from our Sponsored Programs Administration office (pre- and post-award), IRB, Biosafety, Tech Transfer, Clinical Trials Office, Lab Animal Services, International Students/Post Docs Office, and more, so that we can introduce ourselves and talk about the resources the faculty may need. In advance of this meeting, the faculty will complete our onboarding form to describe any projects that will be transferred into our university and resources they’ll need. We also need to get the contract information from those at their prior university so we know who to work with on transferring awards.

Susan Wyatt Sedwick, PhD, CRA, CSM, Senior Consulting Specialist, Attain Partners, SRAI Distinguished Faculty

  • We would invite them to attend our PI orientation if they were coming at the beginning of a semester. It depends on the departments, but quite often I would be asked to be part of the second on-campus interview. We would do whatever we could to ensure a smooth transition.

Domenica G. Pappas, CRA, Associate Vice Provost for Research, Office of Research, Illinois Tech, SRAI Distinguished Faculty

  • We have a new faculty orientation and invite the various offices from our research enterprise (sponsored research, post-award, compliance) to attend and answer questions.
