The aim of this session is to emphasize differences of the SBIR/STTR programs from other federal solicitations, and possible practices for pre-award support to ensure successful proposal submission by small business. Outcomes include protection of your effort in preparing the subaward documentation, and satisfaction at the small business to return and work with you again.

Panel Discussion: The Interconnected Relationships Between Pacific Northwest Research Institutions

Representatives from local research institutions will host an informal discussion on the inter-relationships, joint appointments and partnerships between many Pacific Northwest organizations. Discussion will also include updates on recent changes for local partnerships. All attendees will be encouraged to actively participate, share their thoughts and ask questions.

Afternoon Session I: Negotiating Contract Terms

This session will review common pitfalls in contracting and award negotiation from the perspective of a lawyer and a research administrator. Participants will gain a high-level overview of general negotiation and contracting principles, deep-dive into complex legal requirements and Federal Acquisition Regulations (FARs) and receive tools for conducting institutional-risk assessments. Through a case-study approach, this hands-on session will cover major differences between Federal contracts, industry agreements, and international partnerships and discuss strategies for how to communicate complex principles to individuals within all levels of the organization.

Afternoon Session II: Bringing a Culture of Process Improvement to Research Administration

This session will be a discussion on the value of having a lean culture in your organization and how to make it part of your everyday work. By incorporating lean into daily activities, it will feel less burdensome and demonstration immediate value. We will explore how to incorporate your customer voice into the process.

This session is for research administrative professionals who work in central or departmental units who are either responsible for, or are interested in, helping shape change in your organization.
