PI Intensive for New Faculty and Researchers - Schedule

Day One: October 24, 2024

9:00 am - 10:30 am Research Communication 

Dr. Sides will present a talk on research communication, which will be followed by breakout group discussions. Experts will facilitate these groups discussions and provide feedback on whitepapers that participants prepared prior to the event. 

Learning Objectives: Understand the principles of successful research communication and implement that knowledge by revising a whitepaper that can be used to solicit funding. 

10:30 am - 11:00 am Break
11:00 am - 12:30 pm Panel Discussion: Finding Funding and Talking to Program Officers

Dr. Barzyk and Prof. Cusatis will present a talk on the research funding process, including best practices for contacting and holding meetings with funders. This will be followed by a panel discussion in which faculty experts share their experiences getting their research funded.

Learning Objectives: Demystify the research funding process and gain perspective on the many roads to funding success across a variety of disciplines.

12:30 pm - 1:30 pm Lunch
1:30 pm - 4:00 pm Small Group Workshop
 

Experts will lead small-group workshops on PI Roles & Responsibilities (Prof. Allada), Networking & LinkedIn (Dr. Barzyk), Working with NSF (Prof. Cusatis), Industry Collaborations (Dr. Sides), Building Competitive Grant Applications (Dr. Steenrod), Managing Up for Career Advancement (Prof. Woodward).

Learning Objectives: Receive an introduction to topics critical to career advancement that require both hard and soft skills. Small-group discussion will serve as starting points for further exploration and development of skills.

5:00 pm - 6:00 pm Wine and Cheese Networking Event

 

Day Two: October 25, 2024

9:00 am - 10:30 am Negotiating with Your Institution
 

Prof. Woodward will present a talk on strategies for negotiating contracts, salaries, and benefits with academic institutions.

Learning Objectives: Develop skills to effectively advocate for research faculty members' interests, communicate their value and impact, and to build productive relationships with institutional leaders. 

10:30 am - 11:00 am Break
11:00 am - 12:00 pm Where to Start in Finding Your Resources 

Prof. Allada and Dr. Steenrod will present on how to make the most of resources within their institutions. Topics to be covered include award setup/management, facilities, procurement, editing, foreign travel, and supporting students and trainees.

Learning Objectives: Acquire tactical knowledge that will enable participants to navigate the complexities of performing research and mentoring others. 

12::00 pm - 12:30 pm Discussion Groups and Key Takeaways
Experts will moderate a report-out on participants take-aways from the event.
